What is RTK Surveying?

Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) surveying enables centimetre-level precision in real time. Here's how it works and why it matters.

January 15, 20265 min read

Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) surveying is a GNSS positioning technique that delivers centimetre-level accuracy in real time. Unlike standard GNSS positioning, which typically achieves metre-level accuracy, RTK uses a fixed base station and a mobile rover to correct positioning errors as they occur.

The base station tracks satellite signals and transmits correction data to the rover via radio or cellular link. The rover applies these corrections in real time, achieving positional accuracy of 1-2 centimetres horizontally and 2-3 centimetres vertically.

RTK surveying is widely used in land surveying, engineering surveying, construction setting out, mining surveying and precision agriculture. Its key advantages include real-time accuracy, reduced field time and the ability to verify positions on-site before leaving the field.

At EN Geomatics, we use RTK technology for a wide range of projects across Botswana, from cadastral boundary surveys to engineering setting out and mining pit mapping. Our GNSS RTK systems deliver the precision our clients need, when they need it.
